Our real problem

Author: Marijana Martinović, OŠ Blato, Korčula

Why not start a story from the end? Today trash is everywhere. Everywhere! We can find it on the streets and roads, in parks, in the sea, on the beach, in forests. That is very sad. But why? Why do we still have it all around us? The trash is becoming our problem, more and more.

In my town, on the island of Korčula, we have a big problem with it, because the refuse is all over a big hill. The whole area is completely covered with all kinds of refuse. Everything is in that small place. Everything! Plastic, wood, metal, food, cloth, tires, chemicals…

Because of that, fires on the dumpsite are very common. The smell is sometimes so bad, that people can hardly breathe. The problem is even bigger because adults do not do anything to solve it.

Why has the man produced all the things we now have? Do we need and use all of them? In the process of creating all this, has he thought about the Nature? Does he think about the Nature when he makes new things today? There are a lot of questions, but where are the answers? Maybe the Nature itself will give us the answers.

Today we, the young people, want to change people’s behaviour. We want to save our lives on this Earth. We have ideas, but who will listen to us?

But, always that but! Maybe we should go to the town council and hope that they will do something. Or not? Because I know that the answer will be: „It costs too much money. “Too much money for the Nature, to save its life, as well as ours! Really!?!?

This problem isn’t just in my town, it is all over the island of Korčula and throughout Croatia. But okay, it’s our reality.

In the past, there was much less trash, because there was no plastic or other man made materials. Living was different, the food was respected and it was not thrown away. Peel of vegetables and fruit was used to make humus. Drink was kept in glass bottles or in wooden dishes. People respected the nature, they did not destroy it as they do today. But the Nature remembers everything! All will be given back to us one day.

In the end, we are all still waiting…
